Water

The City’s guesstimation is that it will take several weeks to restore water service (mid-to-late October).[g] Some South Asheville residents have water, but this might be disrupted again. The recommendation is to fill bathtubs and other large containers to store water. Boiling is highly recommended or you risk serious disease!! Gray water can be used without boiling to flush toilets (eg. water from pools, hot tubs, tubs, and creeks).

WELL WATER: Well water is considered compromised if the well flooded and should NOT be consumed from until it has been tested. All well water that did not flood should be boiled before drinking until it can be tested.

If you cannot boil water, 8 drops of regular bleach to one gallon of water. Only use regular, unscented chlorine bleach products that are suitable for disinfection and sanitization as indicated on the label. The label may say that the active ingredient contains 6 or 8.25% of sodium hypochlorite. Do not use scented, color safe, or bleaches with added cleaners. Stir and let stand for 30 minutes before drinking.

Power

If you have spare USB batteries / power banks please charge them from an EV only and hand them out to neighbors to charge their phones. We want to avoid people wasting gas idling an engine just to charge a phone.

Using an EV as a generator:

  • If you have a Tesla, activate sentry mode but disable cameras, this will keep the USB and 12V ports active overnight to charge smaller batteries (with the doors locked, no HVAC used, basically just like a regular car alarm). As far as I know this is the most efficient way to transfer power from the larger traction battery to smaller ones.
  • If you have a larger 12V inverter, you can connect it to the 12V battery in the EV, same as a gas car. The EV’s traction battery should then recharge the smaller 12V battery as needed. Typically a 1500W or higher rated inverter is needed to power appliances.

Mental Health Support – Mind-Body Practices

These practices can help you move through emotions, reduce stress, and feel more calm. However, they can make you emotional first as you’re coming into more contact with what’s present. You might want to sandwich them together.

  • When you’re feeling a lot (including numbness/dissociation place your hands on your body, either your heart or where you’re feeling a lot of sensation or not feeling, and say out loud “Right now I’m feeling…” For example, “Right now I’m feeling overwhelmed and terrified.” Take a few breathes. Repeat saying everything you’re feeling or thinking. This helps your body acknowledge how you’re feeling and stop bracing against it. It can bring some softening
  • Voo – This comes from Somatic Experiencing, a trauma healing modality. Take a deep breath and on the exhale say vooooooooooo. You can moo or boo as well. It create a vibration that helps dissipate energy. Humming is similar and shown to boost the immune system.
  • Bilateral stimulation / butterfly tapping – Place your right hand on your left clavicle/shoulder and left hand on right clavicle/shoulder. Alternate tapping each hand. This is bilateral stimulation that is soothing and actually originated in supporting Hurricane survivors. You can do this while talking out loud about what you have or are experiencing and it helps your brain reduce the emotional intensity.
  • Emotional Freedom Technique aka EFT Tapping. EFT tapping involves lightly tapping on Chinese Medicine acupressure points while verbally processing; it’s been shown to reduce cortisol and is effective at improving PTSD. You can tap on these points without saying anything and will still experience a calming effect. It may increase emotions and sensations before decreasing them; totally normal. Graphic below with points to tap on Begin by tapping on the side of your left hand and start describing how you’re feeling, sensations you’re experiencing, thoughts you’re having. Every 5 statements or so say “I’m open to this energy shifting” or “Even though I’m experiencing X I love and accept myself.” Move the center of the head (really more towards back top of the head), for each point 2-9 you’ll say one statement as you tap. You’ll repeat tapping along these points while rotating. Continue to describe how you feel, sensations, thoughts, etc. Sprinkle in those two statements about energy shifting or loving yourself. As you notice energy shifting begin to make statements about “I trust this won’t last forever. Or I’m open to feeling different” Basically statements that open up the possibility about things changes. You’ll finish tapping by describing how you want to feel, what you want for your community, etc. “I know I can get through this.”

Pharmacy

How to Get Your Medications Refilled:

The North Carolina Board of Pharmacy is maintaining an updated list of open pharmacies in Western NC. The entire list can be found here: https://bit.ly/4ePoHct. Some pharmacies may not be listed. Emergency rules allow you to bring in your existing prescription bottle to get a 30- or 90-day refill at any open pharmacy, even if your usual pharmacy is closed, even if you have no remaining refills listed on your bottle. This does not include refills for schedule 2 controlled substances like pain pills or ADHD meds. Remember:

  1. Bring your prescription bottles.
  2. Someone other than the patient can pick up the prescription (ID may be required for certain medications).

For schedule 2 controlled substances:

  • Controlled Substances & Emergency Response Fact Sheet: Frequently Asked Questions
  • “Patients are generally advised to first consult with their home pharmacist, primary care physician, and/or psychiatrist, as appropriate, to get the guidance needed to sustain their supply of or access to their controlled substance medications during an emergency”
  • From personal experience of someone who has gotten schedule 2 controlled substances refilled when the pharmacy they were first ordered to cannot fill them for some reason
  • First, call your provider and ask them to send the medications to a pharmacy you know is open.
  • It may be smart to call the pharmacy first and ask if they have the medication on hand if you know there is a shortage
  • If you have trouble, pharmacists are incredible resources. Pharmacists that don’t have your medication on hand often know what pharmacies to try, may be able to check what pharmacies in their same chain do have it and are open, may be able to advise you on substitutes if there is absolutely none of your prescription to be had, and may be able to advise you on what to say to your prescriber when you ask them to send your medication elsewhere.

  • As of Mon. Sept. 30 NCDOT drivenc.gov website is showing I-40 East now open between Black Mountain and Old fort for emergency-related travel. • As of Mon. Sept. 30: at least 280 roads are closed throughout the state due to landslides, fallen trees, or failed roads.
  • To Charlotte/Spartanburg: I-26 east past 40 is supposed to be clear all the way to SC. No flooding or downed lines on that road. Reports of gas available past the mountain. Gas available in Gastonia . Other reports of no gas until Shelby toward Charlotte. Gas is confirmed available in Spartanburg. Gas may be out in Shelby
  • I-25 south of Hendersonville is assumed to be open to Greenville, SC. Gas is confirmed available in Gville.
  • FROM REDDIT:
  • We left this morning on 26 towards shelby/gastonia. We had 1/4 tank of gas and just made it to Gastonia where we were able to fill up. Most stations before then were either not open or had pretty long lines. Unsure if the situation has changed since this morning.
  • I have friends who left by that route this afternoon. They had a nearly full tank and 100 miles into SC there were still very long lines at stations that had gas. I would tell him not to try it until he can fill his tank up in Asheville. Maybe wait another day or two. Would be terrible to get stranded.
  • "If you go can make it south towards Greenville the Spinx and Murphys on 25 in Travelers Rest has gas. The Spinx has been getting steady trucks of gas throughout the day. Expect long lines. "
  • As of ~3PM you can take 40W to 74S to Franklin where there is gas available. From there cell service is consistent across the GA line near Clayton.
  • I successfully made it from Asheville to Atlanta.  Here is the route I took if anyone desperately needs to get out.  Please note that the less people driving the better emergency vehicles can get to people!  1-40 W towards exit 51, Sweeten Creek, Sweeten Creek to Hendersonville Rd, Hendersonville Rd to Airport Rd (you'll be in Arden/Fletcher, Get onto 1-26 South, I-26 to US 25, US 25 into Greenville, 185-85 South into Atlanta
  • If you can get to Greenville you are good. Anything North of Greenville is dangerous
  • We left this morning and took I-26 East towards Greenville then turned onto Route 76 Towards Charlotte. Be sure to check DriveNC.gov for road status.
  • 40w was open and totally clear this morning 9/29 from exit 44 (Candler) to exit 55b (Oakley)

EV Charging

  • Check this reddit post for updates
  • As of 6:30 pm 9/29, Tangers Outlet Mall supercharger is the best option for Teslas, but won't work for other EVs. That area also has gas stations, power, water, grocery store (Ingles) and a few restaurants.
  • Biltmore Forest supercharger is the best option for all other EV models if you have the NACS adapter. Many people don't, so please share if you have one, plan to stay there longer to help someone else out.
  • Publix on South Hendersonville is no longer working, to conserve generator power. Once grid power is restored to the area then it should be turned on again.
  • Tesla Supercharger at Whole Foods on Tunnel Road in East Asheville is still offline, that whole area is without power.

Volunteers For AshevilleRelief.com

If you would like to volunteer to help with this project, please join us on Discord.

[a]I get "Unable to accept invite, with 20 online and 120 members. Likely happening for others. Do we want to set up an overflow discord? We could chunk them by topic to reduce load if that's an issue.

FIX:

If people go directly into Discord then join using the invite from there, it works! We may want to mention that somewhere.

[b]I'm working on a google sheet we can crowdsource with suitable folks from here that can feed everything into a google map, if that's useful. If it's redundant just let me know. (Also let me know who from here should have access if we want to proceed with it, and we can figure out best columns to include, etc.)

[c]confirmed?

[d]Hi Rachel!!! I'm going to be doing a bunch of calling and confirming tomorrow, but I've heard this from several sources. Will update if I hear differently!

[e]Please confirm phone numbers on 10/3.

[f]Please confirm. Are they turning people away?

[g][Asheville water comes from 2 different plants. Does this guesstimate apply to people severed by both plants?]

[h]Do these need to be sorted into the neighborhood categories below? Not immediately clear why these are above the location headings if there's a specific reason.

[i]Move this up when it's live.

[j]As of 9/30 I-40 East between Black Mountain and Old Fort now open. Please share any reports of Groceries, Gas, and supplies available east of Old Fort along I-40

[k]Please add if you've acquired some!

[l]My office has excellent cell service and able to get online with my mobile data. It could come another Starlink Station and place to pass out supplies. Safe to get to from 1-40 exit 51 Sweeten Creek and from 53B. Let me know who to contact.

[m]NOT A STARLINK STATION YET

[n]Does anyone have an update on the condition of this location?
